Phishing is Fishy
I’m constantly amazed and even more annoyed by the growing amounts and maturing level of phishing. For those that aren’t familiar with the term “phishing”, click here for the complete Wikipedia reference. Here is a short definition:
In computing, phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
Today was another one of those days when I receive my customary bulk of junk mail along with a surprising (and new) attempt. This particular email came as a “notice” from PayPal saying that a payment had been processed for $47.65 to an entity I didn’t recognize. The form looked familiar as I do a fair amount of business through PayPal. Immediately I reacted as though this may be legit but then my good ol’ cautionary brain kicked in and I did what I usually do and check WHERE the links in the email are going to. Surprise, surprise! Um…yeah, they were linking to a site that was definitely NOT PayPal although they may have created an interface to fool a casual user into thinking it was.
Which takes me to my TIP OF THE DAY (and the Year and the Millennium). NEVER use links in emails for sites that store sensitive data (banks, investment accounts…or, for that matter - ANY site). If you get a notice from a site/company that you in fact do business with, ALWAYS open your browser, type in the institutions web address (example: “www.paypal.com”), login to YOUR account…and if there are in fact any notices, you’ll find them on the actual site.
RULEs OF THUMB - 1. ALWAYS doubt the email, 2. CONFIRM on the REAL site, 3. LAZINESS in these regards can cost you BIG TIME.
That’s the word…and I’m out.
