Search Engine Meets AJAX

searchmash logoI came across a new search engine called searchmash while getting my daily fix of commandN (video blog) and this “new” search tool is something special. Before you think that you’ll be going away from your beloved Google…do not fret. In fact, this IS Google (read the terms of service to see for yourself). This is the first time I even heard about it so it may be one of those pet-projects that hasn’t gotten mass-publicized yet.

Basically, it’s the next generation of search engine that utilizes the wonderful power of AJAX to make the results page a great tool that you can customize on the fly. It can search images, videos…even other blogs for keywords that you search - all in one master results page.

A Must-Have Firefox Plugin for Web Developers

Forget the arguments - I don’t like to repeat myself regarding the near necessity for everyone to switch to the Firefox web browser - especially web developers. Up till today, my favorite add-on extension to my Firefox browser was the Web Developer extensions. Now, that favorite is about to be unseeded (but not disregarded) by a new kid on the block that may be the best thing since sliced raisin cinnamon toast with a light spattering of butter. Mmmm.

Web developers who are serious about their craft….meet Firebug. This extension is all that a stylesheet aficionado could ever hope to have. It’s like opening a treasure chest of “how-did-they-do-that” wealth on any site you visit, not to mention testing your own work. This is a slick extension that EVERY web developer should have on his Firefox browser.

I discovered a new website today via TechCrunch. It’s called LoopNote and looks very interesting…particularly for churches.

LoopNote is essentially a group notification system that allows anyone to create a “loop” to which people can join (and thus are in that particular loop). The “loop” can be about anything. It could be for a band that wants to notify people about upcoming shows or a community sports team that wants to give updates on games or rain outs…. [ Read Full Article ]

As I commented on Bill’s blog, this is another of an increasing number of sites that are hitting the web utilizing a new and exciting coding framework known as Ruby on Rails.
